Barry Linton of Essex Police and his talk about Staying Safe Online.
Cybercrime fraud is now our most commonly reported crime, and it continues to grow apace. Most of the perpetrators are located outside UK Police jurisdiction so our main means of protection is education on how to spot a scam, what to do if you suspect a scam, and how to avoid being a target in future.

At the monthly meeting on Wednesday 21st August our Guest Speaker was Barry Linton of Essex Police, who spoke for an hour about staying safe online, either on your computer or your mobile phone.
This presentation, created for u3a audiences jointly with the Essex Police Cyber Protection team, was first held at Thorpe Bay U3A in Essex in 2017 and has continued to be given to u3a audiences all over the county and via National u3a over Zoom around the country. It is uniquely aimed at the risks to the older generation and is given in a non-technical manner in terms we can all relate to and understand.
The talk covered a wide range of subjects, such as the following:
Dangers of free Wi-Fi
Scam emails, texts, phone calls, WhatsApp
Bogus calling number appearing on your phone
Impersonation Frauds
Internet on-line Payments
Romance Frauds
Contactless Bank Card Frauds
Passwords
Dangers of social media
Even if you do not use a Laptop, Tablet or Smartphone? You are still at risk as will be demonstrated to you.
